Policosanol is a complex mixture of concentrated long chain alcohols derived from plant sources, such as sugar cane. These alcohols are constituents of naturally occurring waxes found in grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and a variety of lower marine organisms. Effects of policosanol on serum lipid profile and hypercholesterolemia have been well documented.
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reported that policosanols from sugar cane wax maintain normal blood low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and normal blood high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations.
